With the sudden warm spell this week, the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) has treated seven teenagers in the last three days for injuries sustained while jumping into the water at Harper’s Quarry. Injuries have ranged from severely sprained ankles to a fractured collarbone.
"We strongly urge parents to speak to their teenagers about the dangers of tombstoning," says Senior Triage Nurse, Amina Khan. "The water at Harper’s Quarry looks inviting, but it hides submerged farm machinery and jagged rocks, and the water temperature remains dangerously cold, risking cold water shock. Please use the safe swimming facilities at Stoneleigh Leisure Centre instead, and remember that our MIU is currently facing four-hour waits due to these entirely preventable accidents."
