The heart of Stoneleigh’s high street is at imminent risk of boarding its doors. Landlord Gary Mitchell has confirmed that The Red Lion faces permanent closure within 30 days unless a solution can be found to manage a crushing combination of soaring energy tariffs and increased business rates.

"We survived the pandemic, but we cannot survive this current economic climate," Mitchell stated in a sobering address to the Parish Council on Tuesday. "Our utility bills have tripled, and the latest tax reassessment has wiped out our operating margins. We are operating at a loss every time we pull a pint." The Stoneleigh Chamber of Commerce is hastily organizing a community summit next week to discuss potential grants, community buyout options, or a reduction in rent from the building's freeholders, warning that losing the 200-year-old pub would be "devastating" to the town's local economy and social fabric.
